Enhancing Food Distribution in Northern Alberta
Sysco’s New Acheson Facility Overcomes Challenges to Meet Regional Deman
In 2006, Sysco Food Services launched the construction of a cutting-edge distribution center in Acheson Business Park, west of Edmonton. Covering 383,560 SF on a 40-acre site, the facility offers advanced dry and cold storage, modern loading docks, and premium office spaces, designed to support the growing food distribution needs in Northern Alberta.
Despite the complexities of building such a large facility during Alberta’s economic boom, the project was completed successfully under the leadership of Bruce Murchison. He managed all phases of construction under a design-build fixed-price contract, coordinating mechanical, electrical, and civil systems.
Key features include a glycol subfloor in the cold storage areas, a dedicated refrigeration building, and 48 advanced loading dock positions. The second-floor office space offers Class “A” amenities, including a state-of-the-art test kitchen and training area.
Sysco’s new facility marks a significant upgrade to Alberta’s food distribution network.
Through proactive communication and schedule management, the project overcame labor shortages and rising costs, ensuring the center’s timely completion and long-term operational success.
